Mercer County Roadway Access Management Code
Mercer
County is the first County in New Jersey to prepare an access management
code for County roads. The County also has received a state Smart Growth
Planning Grant for a project for enhanced implementation of the new access
management code. The objective is to attain consensus between municipal
visions of the county roadway corridors and the County's desired access
level (or desired typical section) for these roads as determined by development
of the technical access management code. In this manner, the County will
coordinate investments in roadway improvements with municipal land use
decision-making.
This project has involved working with municipal representatives to assemble information on current and future land use and transportation patterns. The main product to date has been an atlas of County road "hot spots." This document is a collection of GIS maps that combine County road maps, digital aerial orthophotography, roadway attribute data, and digital photography. The next phase will be to combine this mapping with information on existing and future land uses, in order to project the impact of development upon the County road system and to identify and assess potential roadway improvement alternatives.
